The capital of the state of Colorado is Denver. Denver is the largest city in the state and is also the second most populous county in Colorado after El Paso County. Denver lies on the western edge of the High Plains just to the east of the Front Range of the Rockies. Denver has a population of around 620,000 people which makes it the 23rd most populous city in the entire United States. Denver was founded in 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. the city itself has a gross metropolitan product of just over $157 million which makes Denver the 18th largest metro economy in the nation.
One of the notable acts during the Colorado war was an attack against the camp of Southern Cheyenne Chief Black Kettle that would come to be known as the Sand Creek Massacre. The battle was hailed in the press as a great victory but was later discovered to be and act of hideous brutality and genocide. The gold seekers that took part in the Pike’s Gold Rush were given the name Fifty-Niners and most of them settled in the Denver area.
