By H.L. Mencken

Fiercely clever, scathingly sincere, and hysterically humorous, H.L. Mencken’s insurance of the Scopes Monkey Trial so galvanized the kingdom that it will definitely encouraged a Broadway play and the vintage Hollywood motion picture Inherit the Wind.

Mencken’s no-nonsense sensibility remains to be fascinating: his perceptive rendering of the court drama; his piercing portrayals of key figures Scopes, Clarence Darrow, and William Jennings Bryan; his ferocious tackle the fundamentalist tradition surrounding it all—including a raucous hour of darkness journey into the woods to witness a mystery “holy curler” service.

Shockingly, those studies have by no means been accrued jointly right into a publication in their own—until now.

A non secular Orgy In Tennessee includes all of Mencken’s stories for The Baltimore sunlight, The Nation, and The American Mercury. It even comprises his insurance of Bryan’s loss of life simply days after the trial—an obituary so withering Mencken was once compelled by way of his editors to rewrite it, angering him and major him to rewrite it all over again in a 3rd model even much less forgiving than the 1st. All 3 models are integrated, as is an entire transcript of the trial’s so much mythical alternate: Darrow’s blistering cross-examination of Bryan.

With the increase of “intelligent design,” H.L. Mencken’s paintings hasn't ever appeared extra unnervingly timely—or undying.

It may seem fabulous, but it is a sober fact that a sound Episcopalian or even a Northern Methodist would be regarded as virtually an atheist in Dayton. Here the only genuine conflict is between true believers. Of a given text in Holy Writ one faction may say this thing and another that, but both agree unreservedly that the text itself is impeccable, and neither in the midst of the most violent disputation would venture to accuse the other of doubt. To call a man a doubter in these parts is equal to accusing him of cannibalism.

But a few survive—and a few are enough to carry on. III The inferior man’s reasons for hating knowledge are not hard to discern. He hates it because it is complex—because it puts an unbearable burden upon his meager capacity for taking in ideas. Thus his search is always for short cuts. All superstitions are such short cuts. Their aim is to make the unintelligible simple, and even obvious. So on what seem to be higher levels, no man who has not had a long and arduous education can understand even the most elementary concepts of modern pathology.

But in the meanwhile there is nothing to prevent him examining all the available facts, and even offering arguments in support of them or against them—so long as those arguments are not presented as dogma. The result of all this is that the current discussion of the Tennessee buffoonery, in the Catholic and other authoritarian press, is immensely more free and intelligent than it is in the evangelical Protestant press. In such journals as the Conservator, the new Catholic weekly, both sides are set forth, and the varying contentions are subject to frank and untrammeled criticism.
